203 A Tisket A Tasket
Wednesday & Thursday
Who doesn't love baskets and "hexiex"? They're both showcased beautifully in this little project. Use it as a table topper or candle mat. I used country colors but it would be very festive with holiday or seasonally themed fabrics. The baskets are appliqued using both a prepared edge and needleturn methods. The hexagons are pieced with the traditional English paper piecing method and you'll learn a a new stitch that is virtually invisible on the front of your work. It's the perfect project to carry to your favorite bee!
Finished Project Size: 16" diameter.
Cost: pattern & hexagon templates (required) $5.00, includes original pattern by Kelly Kout & 19 2.25" hexagon templates.
Fabric kit (optional) $7.00, includes pre-washed fabric for baskets, hexagons, border and binding.
Kelly has been interested in quilts since she slept under them as a child at her great aunt's house in Pennsylvania, but did not begin making them until her retirement from the United States Navy Nurse Corps in 1992. She promised herself she would learn to quilt and bake bread when she retired so she signed up for a beginning quilting class at the local fabric store. She realized she LOVED cutting up perfectly good pieces of fabric into tiny pieces for applique, so she took the sage advice of her new quilting buddies, bought a bread making machine and has lots of time for quilting!
Her quilts have received numerous awards and her work has appeared in books by Elly Sienkiewicz, Mimi Dietrich and Jeanne Sullivan. She has been a guest artist at The Applique Academy in Williamsburg, Virginia and the featured lecturer at Baltimore on the Prairie, an applique seminar in Lincoln, Nebraska. As an active member of the American Quilt Study Group she is involved in researching historic quilts.
Hand piecing, applique and quilting are her favorite methods of creating heirlooms for friends and family. Passing these traditional techniques along to others though out her 15 years of teaching is her passion.
