Easy, basic applique techniques and simple embroidery stitches are used to recreate this elegant design found in Baltimore Album quilts of the 1850’s. You can use this block as the first in your Baltimore Album quilt, a center medallion for a larger project, an anniversary or memory block. The original block featured red, pink and a white rose but choose your favorite colors or those of a loved one to make it your own special creation and family heirloom. Kelly will share the story of Baltimore Album quilts and make her extensive library on the subject available during the class. Techniques include the needleturn method of applique, invisible stitches, making sharp points, smooth curves and bias stems. All are easier than you think!

Pattern Fee $3.

Kelly Kout

Kelly has been interested in quilts since she slept under them as  a child at her great aunt's house in Pennsylvania, but did not begin making them until her retirement from the United States Navy Nurse Corps in 1992. She promised herself she would learn to quilt and bake bread when she retired so she signed up for a beginning quilting class at the local fabric store. She realized she LOVED cutting up perfectly good pieces of fabric into tiny pieces for applique, so she took the sage advice of her new quilting buddies, bought a bread making machine and has lots of time for quilting!

Her quilts have received numerous awards and her work has appeared in books by Elly Sienkiewicz, Mimi Dietrich and Jeanne Sullivan.  She has been a guest artist at The Applique Academy in Williamsburg, Virginia and the featured lecturer at Baltimore on the Prairie, an applique seminar in Lincoln, Nebraska. As an active member of the American Quilt Study Group she is involved in researching historic quilts.

Hand piecing, applique and quilting are her favorite methods of creating heirlooms for friends and family. Passing these traditional techniques along to others though out her 15 years of teaching is her passion.

Kelly and Jim live in Bowie, Maryland with their Westie terriers Duke and Bentley.
